At higher altitudes, it is harder for oxygen to reach your lungs due to pressure changes. If you are not acclimated, you can begin experiencing mild symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue. Or, you can begin to experience severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, loss of coordination, and confusion. Colorado’s average elevation sits at 6,800 feet above sea level, and once inside the front range, elevation gains can be rapid and tremendous. There are peaks in the Rocky Mountains 14,000 feet above the Earth’s surface. Rapid ascent of peaks greater than 8,000 feet can cause some people to have altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness.
